Ty Reed grew up in San Diego, CA and started sailing at age 8. He was a sailing national champion in High School, and while in College was an 3 time All-American who won 3 more national championships. After college he competed in the 49er Olympic Class and was ranked as high as 3rd in the US. He also began racing on larger Offshore racing yachts, and in 2009 he was on a team that was the 1st official entry to finish the prestigious TransPac race (LA to Honolulu) and earn 1st in class. Because Ty had been kite boarding since 2003, when racing with kites became popular he was quickly a top contender. He has been on many podiums in the past several years, but highlights are the following: 2013 Formula Master World Champion, 2014 Formula Master North American Champion, and 2014 Hydrofoil Master North American Champion. Whether racing on boats or kites, Ty has relied on Hobie Polarized sunglasses to protect his eyes during long days on the water since high school. The polarization allows him to better distinguish gusts of wind on the water, which give him a competitive edge and have helped him earn more trips to the podium during his racing career.
