Mike Murphy spends a lot of time in the ocean to keep from going crazy. As a teen, he would get depressed while waiting for the surf to get half-decent. Paddling has become a substitute for surf on all the average and below average surfing days that the LA area is plagued by. His dedication to paddling a variety of craft has nothing to do with a race calendar or event schedule. Whether or not there is any competitive outlet, he paddles to get the time in the ocean he needs to be a better me. He’s a better lifeguard, event coordinator, brother, friend, and father with more time spent in the ocean. The very small handful of races he does make in a year have nothing to do with prize money or trophies, and everything to do with the friends he can catch up with at the given event.
